summary:
The White House Office of National AIDS Policy’s “Adelante! Summit” aims to accelerate the nation’s HIV response in Latino communities by raising awareness of the HIV epidemic in Hispanic/Latino communities and inspiring collective action nationwide.
In response to worrying data about HIV in the U.S. Latino community, the White House Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP) will host the “¡Adelante! Summit: A White House Conference to Accelerate Our Nation’s HIV Response in Latino Communities.” To ensure broad participation, ONAP will provide exit disclaimers for the main portion of the summit on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM ET.
This conference comes at a pivotal time. Latinos make up approximately 19% of the U.S. population, but account for nearly one-third of newly diagnosed HIV cases in 2022. Notably, Latino gay men currently account for the highest number of new HIV infections in the country, according to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) surveillance report. Additional data shows suboptimal rates of HIV status awareness, linkage to HIV care and viral suppression, as well as higher rates of HIV stigma among Latinos.
¡Adelante! Summit seeks to bring together the federal government, civil society, social organizations, the private sector, the arts and entertainment industry, health professionals, and community leaders from across the country. The conference aims to foster multi-sectoral collaboration, coordination, and efforts to increase awareness of HIV among Latinos and strengthen efforts to address the HIV epidemic in Latino communities through a comprehensive and holistic approach.
Health disparities within Latino communities remind us that urgent challenges remain, particularly in the response to HIV in this country. This summit aims to galvanize new and existing partners in this important effort and encourage everyone to do their part to drive progress.
