As Latino enrollment reaches a record high this year, the University of California is commemorating National Hispanic Heritage Month and honoring the accomplishments and contributions of Latinos past and present at the University of California. .
As part of our recognition of Latino contributions to the university, UC has updated the wordmark across its digital platforms and the UniversityofCalifornia.edu website to “Universidad de California” for the second year in a row.
Five of UC’s nine undergraduate campuses (UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz) are federally designated as Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). The remaining four undergraduate campuses, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Los Angeles, and UC San Diego, are emerging HSIs, national nonprofit organizations dedicated to Latino and Hispanic students. According to the definition of Excelencia in Education, an institution is considered an institution with a Latinx undergraduate enrollment of between 15 and 24 percent. Success in higher education.

Establishing Hispanic Heritage Month at the University of California
Latinos at UC:
Latinos will make up 38.6 percent of California’s 2024 incoming freshmen. Latinx students made up the largest percentage of domestic CCC transfer students in 2024, increasing by 1.3 percentage points from fall 2023 to 31.2 percent. In fall 2023, Latino students at the University of California were the second largest population group (23.3 percent). In the past five years alone (2019-2023), the University of California enrolled 9,227 California-based Latino students, more than enrolled in 2019. Half (50.1%) of first-generation college students at the University of California are Latino students. Across the non-academic workforce, Latinos make up more than a quarter (28.1%) of the staff. Over the past decade, the number of Latinx faculty has increased by 2.6 percentage points. Additional efforts to promote faculty diversity are also underway.
