The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area in Texas is set to experience the largest increase in Asian residents of all U.S. metropolitan areas from 2022 to 2023, with Collin County contributing significantly to the increase. The surge, highlighted in a new report by the nonprofit Asian Texans for Justice (ATJ), underscores the growing political and social influence of the Asian American (AAPI) community across North Texas.
Notable findings: Texas added more than 91,000 Asian residents over the past year, with Dallas-Fort Worth accounting for about 44,000 of them. Collin County alone added about 20,000 residents, accounting for about 22% of the region’s total increase, according to the report. The largest subgroup in DFW’s Asian community is Indian (35%), followed by Vietnamese (15.3%), Chinese (12.2%), Filipinos (8%) and Koreans (7.1%). The report also notes that while Asian Texans have a higher median household income than other ethnic groups, this data may mask struggles within segments of the community. “We want to dispel the minority myth,” ATJ Executive Director Lily Trullieu told the Dallas Morning News, emphasizing that many Asian Americans still need government assistance and public benefits.
The big picture: Texas is currently home to about 2 million AAPI residents, mostly concentrated in four metropolitan areas, including Dallas-Fort Worth, which is experiencing a surge in civic engagement and economic growth. In its report, ATJ said it aims to amplify AAPI voices and explore the political landscape ahead of the 2024 elections. Asian Americans are often ignored in elections because of their small population, making it difficult for pollsters to collect statistically meaningful data. Despite being the fastest-growing racial group in the country, the high cost of over-sampling, language barriers and diversity within the community make polling expensive, leading Asian Americans to be underrepresented in surveys and overlooked in political strategies. “There is a lack of understanding of what AAPI voters want, what their policy positions are, what issues they care about most deeply,” Trulliu told The New York Times in February.
