2024 China Short Course National Competition
The 2024 China Short Course National Championships kicked off in Wuhan, with Sun Jiajun once again putting in a strong performance in the men’s 50m butterfly.
The 24-year-old Son broke the 22-second barrier for the first time in setting a new Asian record (21.97) in last night’s semi-final, before shaving off a further 0.01 seconds to ultimately win gold in 21.96 seconds.
This was a new national and continental Asian record for Olympic athletes, with Shen Jiahao winning the silver medal in 22.77 seconds and Wu Shengkai winning the bronze medal in 22.98 seconds.
Sun is ranked 7th all-time in the men’s SCM 50 fly competition.

In the women’s competition, 20-year-old Tan Chiang-ting set a new Asian record.
Competing in the women’s 100m breaststroke semi-finals, Olympic medallist Tan set a new personal best of 1:02.66 to earn herself the top seed in tomorrow night’s main event. You can read more about Tan’s incredible achievement here.
Zhang Yufei, a six-time Olympic medalist from Paris, also competed in the swim tonight, competing in the women’s 50m butterfly final.
The 26-year-old Zhang was top-seeded with a score of 25.30 in last night’s semi-final before cutting his score to 25.16 to edge ahead of the other competitors and win the gold medal.
Wang Yichun was right up against the wall in 25.41 seconds, while Yu Yiting completed the podium in 25.46 seconds.
Zhang’s personal best of 24.71 seconds, which he recorded when he won the bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships, holds the Chinese national record and the Asian continental record.
Dong Zhihao, the current 200m breaststroke world champion, competed in tonight’s semi-finals of the men’s 100m breaststroke.
The 19-year-old recorded a top time of 56.98 seconds, beating the other competitors by nearly a second, followed by Qiu Tian, the second seed, in 57.90 seconds and Zheng Ying Ho, the third seed, in 58.06 seconds.
Dong’s participation makes him the fifth-fastest Chinese swimmer in history, according to the World Aquatics Database.

Qian Xinan reached the podium in the women’s 100m backstroke with a personal best time of 56.68. Peng Xuwei won silver in 56.99 and Zheng Huiyu won bronze in 57.52. In the men’s 100m backstroke, Wang Gukailai maintained his lead from last night’s semi-final to win gold in 50.50. Wang is now the second-fastest swimmer in Chinese swimming history, behind national record holder Xu Jiayu and his personal best of 48.88 in 2018. In the women’s 100m freestyle semi-final, Liu Shuhan was top seeded with a time of 52.68, the only competitor to break 53 seconds. In the men’s 100m freestyle, He Junyi clocked 47.32 to take the lead by 0.03 seconds ahead of Liu Wudi who clocked 47.35 at the wall. Wang Haoyu was next, 0.01 seconds behind in 47.36, setting up a fierce battle for the gold medal tomorrow night. In the women’s 800m freestyle final, Ma Yonghui clocked 8 minutes 13.67 seconds to win the gold medal, beating the other competitors by nearly eight seconds. She is currently China’s fourth-fastest ever in this event.
