What you need to know
Spotify’s new AI Playlists are rolling out to premium users in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. They’re currently only available on iOS and Android, not on desktop or web. AI Playlists speed up the curation of your music collection and help you discover new tracks that fit your vibe.
Spotify’s new AI playlists have been released to premium users in the US, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand, and they process text prompts to create collections of songs.
Spotify first introduced the feature back in April, but at the time it was only available to premium subscription users in Australia and the U.K. Now, the feature has expanded to four more countries.
According to a press release from Spotify, the feature is still in beta and is available on both iOS and Android, but not yet on the Spotify desktop or web apps.
Premium subscribers can access the AI Playlist feature by going to their Spotify library on their mobile device and tapping the “+” icon in the top-right corner. From there, they can select “AI Playlist” from the drop-down menu to launch a chat interface, which allows them to describe exactly what they’re looking for in a playlist, such as “upbeat pop music perfect for a summer vacation in Europe” or “a romantic playlist to listen to for date night at home.”
Spotify suggests that the more details you provide, the better your playlist will be, and while you can tweak it later with additional prompts, it’s wise to share as much information as possible from the start.
To create the best playlist, we encourage you to include specific details in your description, such as music genre, decade, mood, favorite artists, etc. You can also use text, numbers, and emojis to get your point across, but keep it clear as we don’t allow offensive language in the app.
AI Playlist will suggest prompts to help users create a description for their playlist, and Spotify says the feature is constantly learning and will improve with each user interaction, with further tweaks planned for the future.
Spotify’s foray into AI music curation is not new: earlier in 2023, the company introduced an AI DJ feature that adds a personal touch by curating music selections based on a user’s unique listening habits.
Our new AI-powered features make it much faster to curate your music collection than the traditional method of creating playlists like you see on most music streaming apps — plus, they’re great for discovering fresh tracks that fit your style.
Unlike the AI DJ feature, which mainly uses your entire listening history to create a personalized playlist and doesn’t let you customize the final selection very much, I find the AI Playlist feature more useful.
