In the past few weeks, disinformation targeting Haitian communities in Ohio and Pennsylvania has sparked chaos, hatred and violence. Additionally, there has been a surge in disinformation on social media targeting the majority Spanish-speaking Latino population. In response, Free Press and the Latino Media Collaborative will co-host a panel discussion, “Challenging Election Lies Targeting Latinos and Immigrants,” on Thursday, September 26 at 3 p.m. ET.
The panel will expose the hate, lies, and racism being used to target Latinos and immigrants on both social and mainstream media. Panelists will discuss how organizations are combating these manipulation attempts and how everyone can play a role in countering these narratives.
While some media and targeted online disinformation campaigns aim to thwart democratic participation, this call highlights ways Latinos and immigrants can identify and reject these manipulative practices, help protect their loved ones from them, and participate in shaping our democracy.

Context: A recent Free Press poll finds that everyday Spanish speakers in the United States are concerned by the twin problems of a decline in local news and the proliferation of online misinformation. Everyday Spanish speakers report lacking the information they need to fully participate in democracy and are more likely to be the target of online misinformation than other demographics.
