GEO-7, scheduled for publication in 2025, will be structured around themes such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and environmental governance.
“The chapter authors spend a lot of time synthesizing existing scientific findings,” van Vuuren says, “but their even more important job is to make sure that the report as a whole tells the right story.”
Al Salih urged the judges to participate in the process because GEO-7 tackles some of the most pressing environmental issues facing the world today. The judges’ work could influence global environmental policy for decades to come, she said. “Their input will shape important environmental decisions and be a valuable contribution to the global cause.”
The Global Environmental Outlook (GEO) is UNEP’s flagship report, providing a comprehensive assessment of the drivers of environmental change, the current state of the environment, the effectiveness of policy responses, and options for achieving different medium to long-term futures. Following a request from Member States in the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) Resolution 5/3, UNEP has begun preparation of the seventh edition of the Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-7) assessment and summary for policymakers. The report is expected to be launched at UNEA-7 in December 2025. The next GEO-7 peer review period is scheduled to run from 1 November 2024 to 15 January 2025. Interested reviewers can apply here.
