Presented by the African American Film Critics Association and the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association: Afro-Latinx Short Film Competition at the AARLCC
The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) and the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association (LEJA) are proud to announce the inaugural Afro-Latinx Short Film Competition presented by Lexus. This inaugural event will take place on October 12, 2024 at the African American Studies Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311.
The Afro-Latino Short Film Competition aims to provide an important platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their short film stories highlighting Afro-Latino identity in the United States and around the world. During the event, filmmakers will have the opportunity to meet with major Hollywood agents and film executives. Submitted filmmakers will receive a one-year membership to Film Independent.
Though often overlooked, this community is deeply affected by the complexities of race, class, culture and identity politics. With more than six million Afro-Latinos, making up approximately 24% of Latin America’s population, this community’s unique cultural experiences are an important voice in film. The history of African Americans and Latinos is not complete or true without featuring the other. As the largest Latino population in the country, South Florida is the perfect backdrop to explore these impactful, textured and fascinating stories of a vibrant and complex cultural community.

“We are thrilled to partner with LEJA in bringing the Afro-Latino Short Film Competition to life. This event not only celebrates the richness of Afro-Latino culture, but also provides an important platform for emerging filmmakers to tell their stories,” said AAFCA President Gil Robertson.
Tony Gonzales
“Afro-Latinos and their stories are crucial to the history of both marginalized communities, and to ignore them is to ignore history,” said Toni Gonzalez, president and co-founder of LEJA. “One way to not only acknowledge this fact, but more importantly, celebrate it, is through film. LEJA has one mission at heart: to amplify the voices of our own community, and we can’t think of a better or more fitting opportunity for this purpose than the Afro-Latino Short Film Contest. We are proud of our voices, and look forward to amplifying them even further through our collaborative partnership.”
The event will highlight the unique cultural experiences that define the Afro-Latino community, deepening understanding and appreciation of this rich and diverse tradition through film.
