CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The NC State women’s golf team placed fourth out of 12 teams at the Cavalier Regional Preview, marking their first top-five finish of the season. The team shot 26-over 878 (294-281-303) and their second-round total score of 281 was the seventh-lowest 18-hole team score in school history. NC State withstood tough conditions in Tuesday’s final round at Birdwood Golf Course to post their best performance of the season.
Freshman Marie Eline Madsen led her second consecutive collegiate tournament, finishing tied for sixth with a score of 1-under 212 (71-67-74). Her second-round 67 was the lowest score of her career with five birdies, 12 pars and one bogey. Her par-4 scoring average of 3.96 tied for sixth among tournament competitors in birdies (10). Madsen began her collegiate career with two top-10 finishes, four times above par and two times in the 60s.
Vania Simont finished next in the pack, tied for 22nd at 8-over 221 (73-71-77). Her best round came in the second round, when she had 4 birdies, 10 pars and 4 bogeys for her first par round of the season. Her par-4 scoring average of 4.07 was ninth-best among the field.
In her first tournament of the season, Elise Reimer finished tied for 30th with an 11-over 224 (77-71-76). Her best round came in the second round with 3 birdies, 13 pars, 1 bogey and 1 double bogey for a par-71. The third round started tough at 8-over par at the turn, but Reimer shot 3-under on the back nine to finish in the top 30 out of 71 competitors.
In her first tournament of the year, Caitlin Whitehead finished tied for 34th at NC State with a career-best score of 12-over 225 (73-72-80). Her second-round 72 tied for the worst round of her career and she still had a clean card with just 17 pars and one bogey on the penultimate hole.
In the individual tournaments, Leah Ludwick had a personal best result, finishing tied for 41st place with a score of 16-over 229 (76-76-77). Lauren Olivares Leon finished the week tied for 50th place with a score of 19-over 232 (79-77-76).
NC State finished the tournament fourth in par-3 average (3.13), par-4 average (4.24) and birdies (36) and fifth in par-5 average (5.12) and par (170).
