FDA’s Oncology Center of Excellence Project Community will host the first-ever National Hispanic/Latino Family Cancer Awareness Week on September 20-26, 2024. The week will feature public cancer conversation panel discussions and a social media campaign using the hashtag #LatinoCancer.
Its purpose is to increase awareness of cancer in the Hispanic/Latino population. National Hispanic/Latino Family Cancer Awareness Week aims to bring together community-based groups to increase cancer awareness, build knowledge about participating in cancer clinical trials, and increase understanding of how to contribute to the national genetic database for cancer research.

Why: Cancer is the leading cause of death for the Hispanic/Latino population in the United States, with approximately 23,800 Hispanic/Latino men and 22,700 Hispanic/Latino women dying in 2021. Hispanics/Latino people have higher rates of infection-related cancers, including approximately two-fold higher rates of liver and gastric cancer compared to non-Hispanic white (NHW) people. Cervical cancer rates are 32% higher among Hispanic/Latino women in the continental U.S. and Hawaii, and 78% higher among women in Puerto Rico, compared to NHW women. Hispanic/Latino children and adolescents have significantly higher rates of several cancers, including leukemia and lymphoma, and lower 5-year survival rates than non-Hispanic people.
