Mao Msika of the University of California teamed up with Jessica Arzola (not pictured) to win in straight sets in the first round of doubles in North Carolina.
Cary, N.C. – California girls tennis doubles pairing Jessica Arsola and Mao Msika won their opening main draw match at the ITA U.S. Championships on Wednesday, but Arsola lost her opening main draw singles match at Cary Tennis Park.
The No. 16-ranked Golden Bear duo defeated No. 3 seeds and No. 4 world No. 4 Luciana Perry and Sydney Ratliff of Ohio State 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the Round of 16 on Thursday, where they will face Georgia’s Dasha Vidmanova and Aysegul Mahto in a matchup at a time to be determined.
Arcola, ranked 30th in singles, lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to No. 70 Sabine Lutlauka of Pennsylvania in the round of 64. The Cal senior advanced to the repechage and will face Ohio State’s Perry in the first round on Thursday at 7 a.m. Pacific time.
