The team there had just completed a new sustainable structure when generous supporters of the New Canaan Library proposed a lecture series to honor former director Lisa Oldham’s contributions to the building.
It was early 2023, and the library was working with “a number of groups in New Canaan that were concerned about the environment and climate change,” Oldham recalled.
“Combining this with our mission of promoting learning in the community, we decided that the lecture series would focus on nature and the environment,” she told NewCanaanite.com.
Fast forward about 18 months.

The ‘Oldham Nature and Environment Lecture Series’ begins at 7pm on Tuesday 15th October with world-renowned climate scientist Catherine Hayhoe (register here).
He is chief scientist at The Nature Conservancy and author of the best-selling book Save Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World, viewed by more than 5 million people worldwide. Hayhoe, who is also the host of a TED talk, said, “Mr. Hayhoe has revealed something surprising.” He has a talent for translating complex climate issues into accessible public debate,” library officials said in a press release announcing the lecture series.

“Her focus is positive and inspiring,” she said. “As a leading authority, she is sought after by organizations ranging from financial institutions to news organizations to religious organizations.”
In addition to his role at the Nature Conservancy, Hayhoe is the Horn Distinguished Professor and Endowed Professor of Political Science in the Department of Public Policy and Public Law at Texas Tech University, the library said in a statement.
“She is a member of the American Geophysical Union, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Canadian Society of Meteorology and Oceanography, American Science Association, and serves on advisory boards for organizations such as Netflix, UBS, and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.” It is stated in the release. “She has been named a United Nations Earth Champion, a Global Evangelical Alliance Climate Ambassador, and one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People.”
