Latinos have always been part of the Americas, are the continent’s indigenous people, and represent an ever-increasing share of the national population.
Today, one in five people in the United States identifies themselves as Latino. It is the nation’s largest racial or ethnic minority, and is expected to grow from 65 million people to more than 111 million people by 2060, according to the Census Bureau.
The influence of Latinos on politics, culture, and society as a whole is undeniable. That’s why, in honor of last year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, Time magazine created a list highlighting the inspiring Latinx leaders who are reshaping their industries and the world.
This year, we’re highlighting 17 more US-based trailblazers, from Hollywood to Washington DC and everywhere in between. We selected the groups based on the importance of their work and the diversity of their perspectives.
Some, like Olympic gymnast Hesley Rivera and Marias singer Maria Zardoya, have made their way to stardom and are proud to represent their communities. Social media influencer Tefi Pessoa, like many young Latinas, has faced criticism for not being Latinx enough, regardless of the languages she speaks publicly or where she’s from. It’s a feeling I can relate to. “If my ancestors met me, they would like me and I would want them to be proud of where I come from,” Pessoa says.
