Korean pop star Choi Siwon, Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto and Chinese-Canadian star Simu Liu participated in a panel discussion at the Milken Asia Summit in Singapore on September 19. A forum for discussing important issues, the summit saw the stars delve into the growing influence of Asian culture in the entertainment industry.
Changing trends: The actors, who were also in Singapore for the Formula 1 Grand Prix, spoke about the impact films like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” have had in promoting representation. “We’ve really seen a seismic shift in the industry over the last 12 years or so,” Liu said. “‘Crazy Rich Asians’ has really exploded in popularity around the world, which is really exciting.”
Self-reliant community: When the conversation touched on the challenges facing Asian actors in Hollywood, Liu emphasized the need for the community to “figure out how to be self-reliant and create a self-reliant system.” Jacinto agreed, saying, “If we have allies in the directors, the financing department, the producers, I think we can move things forward a lot faster.” Choi, who shared his experience as a member of the popular boy band Super Junior, also emphasized the importance of authenticity in delivering a strong performance in order to stand out.
