SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced a proclamation designating May 2024 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

With more than 6 million Californians of Asian or Pacific Islander descent, California is home to a dynamic AAPI community that is an invaluable part of our state and nation. During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we celebrate California’s incredibly diverse heritage and all the ways AAPI Californians enrich and strengthen our society.
Since the state’s founding, AAPIs have written California’s story and helped build the state we know. We believe that generations of AAPIs from diverse backgrounds are educators, military personnel, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, community builders and activists, and every aspect of our society, culture, and daily life. I am proud of the immeasurable contribution I have made as a shaping leader.
We must also recognize that throughout history, AAPI communities have been the target of violence, disenfranchisement, immigration restriction efforts, and other xenophobic policies at the federal, state, and local levels. The echoes of this dark history are evident in the shameful acts of anti-Asian hate seen across the country today. It is imperative that we confront racism, past and present, and fight for the safety and inclusion of our AAPI friends and neighbors.
During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, California honors the irreplaceable heritage of the AAPI community, its incredible strength and resiliency, and critical role in moving our state and nation forward. Masu. This month and every month, let’s stand up for all California families and work together to fulfill the promise of a California for everyone.
Therefore, I, California Governor Gavin Newsom, hereby proclaim May 2024 as “Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.”
