Small banks and credit unions have many advantages. Yet, one of the biggest drawbacks to banking with a smaller financial institution is that you may not have access to all of the latest financial technology.
Google Wallet is trying to fix this.

Since its launch more than a decade ago, Google’s payments platform has gradually added support for more banks, and last summer expanded to include driver’s licenses, insurance cards, transit passes, gym membership cards and club rewards cards.
Now, about 50 new banks have been added to the list of supported financial institutions (list provided by AndroidPolice), and if you’re a member of any of these banks, you can use Google Wallet to tap and pay – no physical card required.
And California residents can add their driver’s license to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Here’s how:
Most of these smaller organizations have only a few branches in one state, and in some cases, only one branch. Currently, approximately 5,000 US banks are supported.

If your bank is on this list, you can add your payment card by going to the Google Wallet app, tapping the (+ Add to Wallet) button in the bottom right, selecting (Payment card), and following the set-up steps.
