CAIRO – 30 September 2024: Egypt will assume the presidency of the African Peace and Security Council for one month from October 1, said Mohamed Ghad, Egypt’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative of the African Union.
Ghad said on Monday that Egypt will strive to strengthen the Council’s role in maintaining peace, security and stability, and addressing security and development challenges facing the African continent.
Egypt’s Security Council Presidency takes place in a complex regional and international context with increasing security challenges, and is aimed at establishing stability and security on the African continent; To achieve this requires concerted efforts and transparent consultation on how to address them through a comprehensive approach. Egypt will organize a number of events, starting with a dialogue meeting with foreign ministers on peace and security issues on the African continent, consultations with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, and a visit to Cairo to host a United Arab Emirates meeting. The Council will also visit the Egyptian Peacekeeping Training Center under the Ministry of Interior.
Egypt also announced that the Sudanese crisis broke out on April 15, 2023, as part of Egypt’s keenness to strengthen solidarity with the Sudanese people, support Sudanese state institutions, and prepare the support of the Council and African countries. This will be his first visit to Port Sudan since his departure. The union will be responsible for advancing efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis and will review the situation on the ground.
Egypt’s presidential program includes holding annual consultations between the African Peace and Security Council and the United Nations Security Council, the African Trio of the Security Council and the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission.
A joint meeting was also held between the Peace and Security Council and the Permanent Representatives Subcommittee on General Oversight, Budget Coordination, Finance and Administrative Affairs, chaired by Egypt, to consider financing for peace operations in Africa. be done. The session was held to discuss developments in the situation in Somalia and post-disengagement arrangements for the African Union Transitional Mission to support Somali state institutions in the fight against terrorism and in building and maintaining peace.
The Ambassador also reported that other meetings will be held on the fight against terrorism on the African continent, the humanitarian situation on the African continent, women, peace and security issues, climate, peace and security, etc.
Egypt was unanimously elected to a two-year Peace and Security Council seat as representative of the North African region at the African Union Executive Council meeting in February 2024.
