BETHESDA, Md. – Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC) leadership and staff attended a Health Services Operations Advisory Group (HSOAG) meeting Sept. 11.
The four-day conference, held Sept. 9-12, brought together experts, leaders and stakeholders from various fields to discuss the current state of medical care in the Marine Corps and the organizational structure that supports it.
NMRC staff introduced their ongoing research and development work to other HSOAG attendees, and NMRC Commander, Capt. Franka Jones, addressed the assembled stakeholders on the role of research and development in marine sanitation.
“The Health Services OAG is an opportunity for Navy medical leaders in support of Fleet Marine Forces to come together and focus on shaping the future of operational health services support, consistent with the Commandant’s direction,” said Rear Adm. Pam Miller, Marine Corps Medical Officer (TMO). “Research and development is essential for the Marine Corps to keep up with the rapidly changing field of military medicine.”
Between sessions, HSOAG members engaged with NMRC researchers through research posters and displays on the command’s advanced medical development programs. Posters on display showcased recent research projects and capabilities in the areas of blast exposure, biodefense, vaccines and therapeutics, infectious diseases and NMRC’s diagnostic laboratory, as well as current clinical trials, all of which support Marine Corps health and readiness.
“NMRC’s participation in the Health Services Operational Advisory Group is a critical conduit for bilateral communication and collaboration to coordinate Naval Medicine research and development efforts to address medical capability gaps and requirements for the U.S. Marine Corps,” said Commander Mark Simons, NMRC deputy science director.
The Marine Corps Health Service, led by the TMO, advises the Commandant and the Marine Corps Headquarters Staff on all medical matters. The TMO serves as the functional expert liaising with the appropriate headquarters agency to determine medical requirements and makes recommendations on all medical matters related to the support of the Marine Corps.
In support of the Navy, Marine Corps and the U.S. joint warfighter, NMRC researchers study infectious diseases, biological weapons detection and defense, combat casualty care, environmental health issues, aerospace and undersea medicine, medical modeling and simulation, operational mission support, epidemiology and behavioral sciences.
