LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Advocates and community members gathered at the Capella Performing Arts Center for a summit aimed at fostering empathy, understanding and support for individuals experiencing migration.
The event, hosted by the Cooley Area Immigration Task Force in collaboration with the Franciscan Office of Perpetual Worship Affiliates, the Franciscan Center for Spirituality, and the Kino Border Initiative, encouraged participants to focus on language, dignity, and hope. It provided an immersive learning experience.
The program featured a dynamic panel representing diverse perspectives, including individuals with migration experience, local employers, and experts involved in humanitarian parole programs.
Each speaker shared their unique insights, shedding light on the challenges immigrants face, the systemic changes needed to support them, and how immigrants are perceived.
“Many of the people coming into our country right now are fleeing violence, they are fleeing corruption, they are fleeing incredible insecurity. We are a nation of immigrants, and we are fleeing the best of ourselves. I think acceptance makes you better,” says Sister Eileen McKenzie of the Franciscan Sisters of Eternal Adoration.
Participants participated in an interactive workshop and learned how to navigate migration conversations with compassion and respect.
The summit highlighted actionable steps to stand by and advocate for migrants in our communities.
