After a stalker showed up at Loan’s childhood home and numerous other incidents with “fans,” the artist posted two now-infamous videos on TikTok in which she denounced society’s normalized and inhuman treatment of celebrities. While many supported her stance, recognizing the obsession of fans and the tragic fate of famous women who fall victim to such societal fixation, Loan also faced a wave of ridicule and hateful criticism.
Critics of her position claim that she “was not born for fame” and “doesn’t appreciate her fans” because she refuses to allow herself to bend under the weight of publicity and likability, like so many before her. Unlike many celebrities who accept and even embrace the heights they find themselves in, Loan challenges the very notion of fame itself.
Much of the backlash seems to come from resentment at the fact that Chapel Lawn rejects the kind of worship that so many celebrities aspire to. She stands apart from the clean, tidy image of Taylor Swift, shattering the illusions of perfection and invincibility that cloud so many in her position, and does so with a candor that is incredibly inspiring to some and excruciating to others.
