GREENPOINT — In celebration of Climate Week, state Attorney General Letitia James and Department of Environmental Conservation Interim Director Sean Maher on Wednesday announced and celebrated the completion of the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund.
GCEF has invested more than $68.6 million in environmental protection efforts in the Greenpoint area and was established as part of the state’s 2010 settlement with ExxonMobil to compensate communities that allowed millions of gallons of oil to contaminate land and groundwater for more than 50 years.
“After holding ExxonMobil accountable for its careless destruction of Greenpoint’s environment, the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund has invested millions of dollars to help rebuild the neighborhood and bring residents together,” James said in a statement.
Projects funded by GCEF include the Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Centre, environmental programming at Greenpoint Eco School, tree and flower planting by Greening Greenpoint, the ongoing restoration of Monsignor McGollick Park, the installation of numerous rooftop gardens, renovations to 19 parks and improvements to community gardens.
