On October 8 and 9, 2024, the Moroccan city of Casablanca will host the Digital Africa Summit (Ads 2024), an event that will bring together the main players in the African digital sector. The central theme of this sixth edition will be artificial intelligence (AI) among the challenges and opportunities in the future development of Africa, announced Yousef Cheikh, president of the Moroccan Advertising Association (Gam), which will organize the event. It is expected to have 30 participants and 70 speakers, of which 40 percent will be women. The organizers expect a significant increase in the number of participants compared to last year, when Ads attracted more than 2,800 participants from 47 countries, including 27 African and 65 international experts.
AI offers great potential for innovation, especially for young people, but it also carries great risks, such as the creation of social inequalities. Africa in particular is at risk of widening the digital divide. Morocco and Africa need to master this technology to ensure it can play a leading role in the new digital era, but this requires comprehensive policies and security measures. Interpol has recently highlighted the growing danger of cybercriminals using AI, especially through advanced phishing techniques and online fraud, and this topic will be at the heart of the event’s discussions. ADS 2024 will focus on AI, its potential for development in areas such as e-commerce and marketing, and the preventive measures needed to avoid the misuse of the technology.
The continuing evolution of the ADS demonstrates the organizers’ desire to strengthen Africa’s digital integration and promote synergy among African countries to address common digital development challenges. The pan-African transformation marked by this mobilizing event is not limited to a mere name change, but leads to a rethinking of the objectives and expectations of this event, which has become an unmissable event for decision-makers, entrepreneurs, investors and digital readers. In addition to being a showcase for innovation, the Summit will be a “catalyst of creativity” with the participation of companies such as Google and TikTok. It will also present the Africa Digital Awards, which recognize the most innovative digital campaigns on the African continent. Created to celebrate excellence in the digital field, these awards honor initiatives, companies and actors that contribute to the development of the African digital ecosystem. These awards aim to promote the development of an inclusive and sustainable digital economy in Africa. Finally, the Summit will encourage Africa to reflect on how to make the most of AI while maintaining a balance between innovation and security.
In addition to conferences and panels, there will also be networking sessions, workshops and demonstrations of innovative digital solutions, giving participants a unique opportunity to share experiences, build partnerships and discover the latest tech trends and innovations. A highlight this year will be the “Digital Garden” – a tech hub dedicated to innovative start-ups, offering them an unexpected opportunity to present their solutions and products to an audience of investors, partners and potential customers.
