A group of girls from the First Devonshire and West Pembroke Brownie Pack champion marine life and promote environmental responsibility.
A spokesperson said: “A small group of girls who are members of First Devonshire and West Pembroke Brownie Pack meet at First Baptist Church in Devonshire. They are passionate about championing marine life locally and globally. And we have big visions of what kind of change we can make to our oceans.
“The girls, ages 7 to 10, bonded and worked together as a sisterhood to discuss, plan and create posters and commercials, as well as advocate for sea creatures who cannot speak for themselves. Their slogan is “Saving our friends at sea – it starts with you and me.”
“Since we started our work on September 12th, they have already read articles about pollution and its negative impact on the ocean, watched videos, discussed the impact of microplastics on fish, turtles and other marine life, and You are signing up to participate in KBB’s coastal event: a clean-up effort to clean one of the bays on the South Shore on October 6th.
“Currently, they are working on designing environmental T-shirts that display their artwork, sending a message urging others to refrain from ocean pollution. The shirts will be sold and a portion of the proceeds will go to KBB , BAMZ’s Turtle Project, and the Brownie Environmental Program. They are planning a trip to Trunk Island, BUEI, and BAMZ, where they will study marine life.
“They will incorporate literature on marine animals and global warming into Brownie’s research, and will all be involved with Kids and Plastics, an environmental organization for children. We are planning to design trash art and marine costumes.
“Maxine Robinson, a famous poet and tawny owl, will help the girls compose poems that revolve around the fragile lives of our marine animal friends. Our friends at Toastmasters will called to hone your speaking skills.
“Public speaking has already begun and each girl will be encouraged to write a speech to share at a symposium that will be held to showcase the work being done to advocate for justice for marine life.
“Last year, several girls graduated to join the Girl Guides, with some returning as leadership assistants. “The girls are from Elliott, West Pembroke, Harrington Sound, Frances Patton, MSA, BHS and Saltus Grammar School. I’m from
