The Board of Supervisors today approved $484,310 from the state to improve health outcomes for African American infants.
This funding will be used by California Perinatal Equity to address health harms such as low birth weight, premature birth, and infant and maternal mortality for Black mothers and children, particularly due to bias and racism in health care settings. Provided by the initiative.
In San Diego County, black infants die five times as often as white infants before they reach one year of age. Black infants are also 50% more likely to be born prematurely.
In California, black women are more than three times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy-related causes caused by prejudice and racism.
The county’s Perinatal Equity Initiative, launched in 2018, is an expansion of the Black Infant Health Program, which provides culturally appropriate support services and resources to African American families.
Funding from the Perinatal Equity Initiative will support fatherhood programs for new and expectant fathers to support partners, provide implicit bias training to hundreds of health care professionals, and support the Black Legacy Now public awareness campaign. used.
We also have an active Community Advisory Board with 200 community members who provide feedback and direction on program activities.
